Statue of Unity: The World's Tallest Statue and a Symbol of National Pride
Located at Kevadia—now known as Ekta Nagar—in the Narmada district of Gujarat, the Statue of Unity is more than just a statue; it is a living symbol of India’s unity, integrity, and spirit. Dedicated to the 'Iron Man of India,' Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, this 182-meter-tall structure holds the distinction of being the tallest statue in the world.
A Tribute to Sardar Patel
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Home Minister of independent India, played a historic role in integrating 562 princely states into a unified India. It was through his leadership and foresight that various regions—which could otherwise have remained fragmented—emerged as a single nation.
The statue was built to commemorate the contributions of Sardar Patel. It was unveiled on October 31, 2018—his birth anniversary, which is celebrated annually as 'National Unity Day' (Rashtriya Ekta Diwas).
Features of the Statue
Standing at 182 meters (approximately 600 feet), the Statue of Unity offers a commanding view of the Narmada River and the Sardar Sarovar Dam. It is situated on an islet known as Sadhu Bet and is connected to the mainland by a bridge approximately 300 meters long.
The height of the statue—182 meters—is symbolically linked to the 182 seats of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly. This statue represents the nation's democracy, unity, and collective strength.
Public Participation in its Creation
The most remarkable aspect of this monument is that ordinary citizens and farmers participated in its construction. Farmers from across the country donated their old agricultural tools; the iron collected from these was used in the building of the statue.
Thus, the 'Statue of Unity' is not merely a government project; it has become a symbol of the sentiments and patriotism of millions of Indians. It also honors the contributions made, in particular, by farmers and tribal communities.

A Message of Unity
The Statue of Unity reminds us that India’s greatest strength lies in its unity in diversity. Regardless of differences in language, region, religion, or culture, upholding the nation's unity and integrity is a collective responsibility shared by us all.
This monument stands to keep alive, for the present generation, the dream of a united India—a vision once envisioned by Sardar Patel. This pride of Gujarat serves as a source of inspiration for every Indian.
